Help needed understanding phrase
« on: Sunday 18 February 24 20:52 GMT (UK) »
I post this request in the vain hope that someone might help me understand something an ancestor of mine said.
My Great Grandfathers daughter Mary Ann Elizabeth Pallister was convicted at the Central Criminal Court in London in 1865 of Arson. When asked why she did it she replied “ I did it because I lost my name.”

"To lose your name" usually means "to lose your reputation" - which for a young woman would imply that she has been promiscuous - whether she actually has or not.

Thank you for that explanation. I had wondered if it meant lost her mind, but this gives me something to think about.

Hi,

Welcome to RootsChat :)

Have you seen this newspaper report that shows that Mrs POOLE says Mary did it because she was not permitted to go out?  A different reason than given by Mary in Court.

Regards,
Daisy

Thanks very much for that. I hadn’t seen that article. It certainly has me thinking. I’m not quite sure what to make of it but it seems a very likely explanation but why she said something different later is a mystery.

It is possible that both her explanations were true ie she wasn't allowed out because she had lost her reputation.  Only guesswork of course.

Thank you for that. I was trying to link the two statements and your explanation would seem most likely.
Thank you to all who have offered help.
