Help finding Pirotte's in Liege, Belgium.
« on: Wednesday 21 February 24 20:48 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I'm looking for any information I don't have for the Pirotte family of Liege. Possible place names are; Ougree, Jemepne and Hollogne.

Here's what I know:

My relative is Albert George Pirotte b.1919-1973 both Swansea. He married Jane Staddon in 1942 Swansea.

His parents were: Arthur Jules Gerard Pirotte b.1883 Belgium d.1966 Swansea and (m.1918 Swansea) to Mary Butler.

Arthur (above) parents were: Toussaint Pirotte b.1846 Belgium d.1903 Belgium. (M) Marie Catherine Havaux b.1854 Belgium.

Toussaint (above) parents were: Lambert Pirotte d.16/1/1869? Belgium (m) Elisabeth Jolis b?

I know Albert George Pirotte's b.1919 children information but know nothing more than mentioned above, further back in the family.

Any help or information would be very much appreciated if at all possible.

Kind regards.

A lot of these records are on familysearch. When you run out of indexed records, they also have many unindexed image sets. It's important to read each record carefully as Belgian records have a lot of information + crossreferences to other events.

Arthur Jules Gerard Pirotte's birth was in Hollogne-aux-Pierres in 1883
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:6J83-Q87S
His father is listed as aged 37, his mother aged 27

There are many other records for his siblings which are indexed.
His parents married in 1876, in Jemeppe
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:6J87-ZFLK
It looks to me like this record says that  Toussaint is resident with his mother in Herstal, his father died in Herstal in 1869, and his birth was in Wandre, 16 March 1846.  His wife was born and resident in Jemeppe which will be why the marriage is there.

Unfortunately the additional info (pieces de mariage) for Jemeppe on familysearch only go up to 1860.

Now here's where it gets interesting.  Lambert and Elizabeth married in Wandre, but only in 1856.  https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:6J8H-RGSV
Lambert had been previously married, to a woman called Jeanne Doyen who had died 1849.
If you look at the second page of the marriage record, near the bottom it starts talking about kids.  It mentions Toussaint Jolis, 16 March 1846, and a sister born 1852.

So Toussaint was born outside wedlock, but when his parents married in 1856 his father recognised him and his sister.

His birth is here. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:6J8Z-WG7J
Incorrect father's name given on index - there is no father listed, his grandfather was the one who registered the birth.

Thanks joger, that's brilliant. Will have a good look through.

Thank you too, jorose. There's a good bit of info to sleuth through there. Does look as though Lambert might have had 2 women in his life at some point.

Kind regards and thanks again both. You've both been really helpful and opened up research avenues.
