Philip Mottershead death in Macclesfield 1860
« on: Thursday 22 February 24 10:47 GMT (UK) »
Decided to order the digital image, of the entry of death for the above, to confirm it matched the Philip in my friend's tree. I expected to find a male agricultural labourer but instead found a female cotton spinner!  :o

Philip Mottershead female cotton spinner died aged 62 at Union Workhouse, Prestbury Road of dementia, congestion of the brain. Owen Owen present at the death.

My friend's Philip Mottershead in 1851 aged 48 ag lab born Macclesfield, living in Crompton Road with, wife Betty 43 a quill winder, and daughter Eleanor 11 a silk piecer.

Any suggestions?

He is also on the Cheshire Workhouse death records as 28th December 1860. It just gives his age and 'Chargeable to the Parish of Macclesfield.'

His wife was a widowed silk worker on the 1861 census.

Possible that the person who registered his death made an error, gave wife's occupation or he had changed his.

Thanks for that - sorry I forgot to give the date of death in my first post - 28 December 1860 - yes it is the same - I’ll assume it is the right one, as no other near matches found so far.

Best wishes

Just checked my friend's tree and it states the following Mottershead children for Philip & Elizabeth/Betty:

Abraham 1824-1875
Mary Ann 1826
Philip Leyland 1829-1891
Eliza 1838
Eleanor 1840
Eve 1846

yet their marriage is listed as Feb. 1838 in Gawsworth, Cheshire

Do you have a copy of the marriage certificate to Betty?
Registered Macclesfield 1838 March quarter vol. 19 page 89

Phillip could have been married before to another Elizabeth.

I have an ancestor who married 3 times each one was an Elizabeth.

FindMyPast have the image of the Gawsworth marriage - 7 February 1838.

Philip Mottershead, 34, bachelor, Labourer.  Father:  William, Labourer
Betty Leyland, 34, spinster.  Father:  George, Weaver

Both made their mark.

Just to confuse matters -

Marriage - 17 March 1785 at Prestbury -

Philip Mottershead, Cotton Spinner and Betty Wheelton - both of Macchesfield

Marriage - 16 January 1851 at Prestbury

Philip Leland Mottershead - 19, bachelor, Labourer.  Father:  Philip, Labourer
Ellen Fields - 18, spinster.  Father:  John, Weaver

Witnesses:  Abraham Mottershead and Mary Ann Mottershead.  All made their mark

Wow so much info. Thank you!

Research finds Ellen (nee Field/s) died in 1856 aged 22 - resulted in 4 off-spring

Then my friend has a Philip Lelland marriage in Hurdsfield in 1859 to Elizabeth Hammond as the next event - resulted in 7 off-spring

I'm not sure how the Wheelton marriage fits in yet

Best wishes!
