Grace McNab born Port Glasgow?? 1817 parents???
« on: Friday 23 February 24 01:45 GMT (UK) »
Good day all,

My 2nd Great Grandfather Ninian Paton married a Grace McNab in Glasgow in 1849 but I cannot find any details of her parents or confirmation of her birth. I suspect her father might be Alexander McNab but the birth locations do not match (Census has her born at Port Glasgow) but the possible birth (ScotlandsPeople) seems to be Killin. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

Hello there

The marriage certificate should have parents details for both of them.

Are those birth places far apart?

If she was born 1817 and married 1849 she would be 32 so possibly had been married before meaning McNab wasn’t her birth name.

The marriage certificate should have parents details for both of them.

Civil marriage in Scotland started in 1855, before that it will be the church record, and may not give much information.

If she died after 1854 her death certificate will name her parents if the informant knew who they were.

i see that she died in Australia. Parents unknown on death cert., sadly.

Have you looked at the birth certificate for her daughter Agnes born in 1856 in Victoria for information about the mother's place of birth? As you only have place of birth from the 1851 census, that birth document for her daughter would be useful.

Ninian Paton had a previous marriage before Grace McNab.
The children born in his second marriage to Grace were Andrew (1850) Margaret Primrose (1852) and in Australia Agnes McAlpine (1856)
I think I would look at names of those children as possible parents for Grace.

It looks as if Grace McNab was also previously married in 1839 in Port Glasgow to Alexander Grieg, and they had a son born in 1840.
This is her in the 1841 census.

I note she is aged 30 in both 1841 and 1851 census. So maybe born well before your year of 1817.

Is there any information on her 1839 marriage record about her parish, abode, or names of witnesses?

I would be extremely hesitant in thinking the baptism in Killin is her, because it is the only one you can find.
Have you considered that she was illegitimate? It is quite probable that she is one of the many where a baptism record was never made, or has been lost.
