The Manchester Times of 28 December 1861 has this:

THOMAS-BAILEY  On the 19th inst Mr Emmanuel Thomas of Craven Terrace, Sale Moor to Miss* Elizabeth Bailey of The Downs, Bowdon.

*the print is very blotchy, and might read 'Mrs'.

Place of marriage not given, unfortunately.

Well found Galium.
If Elizabeth lived on The Downs (which is in Altrincham to most people) then she had several local churches to choose from. Not St John's which apparently is C of E, but there was The Downs Congregational Church just off the Higher Downs. There was a Bowdon Presbyterian Church somewhere in the vicinity that I can't remember. And there was the famous Dome Chapel on Cavendish Road, (parallelish to Higher Downs) which was Methodist if I remember correctly. That one has gone of course, like so many other beautiful buildings. It is a great pity because you could use it as a landmark for miles around.
I went to the girls grammar school at the top of the hill but I barely recognise the area these days.

As the marriage is shown as Manchester Register etc, it wouldn't have taken place in Altrincham. As mentioned earlier, the only solution is to order the Certificate, sadly.
