Manchester Library Marriage Request
« on: Friday 23 February 24 14:00 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone,

I have been looking for details of a 2nd marriage between my 5x great grandfather, Emanuel Thomas and Elizabeth Bailey. Lancashire BMD says they were married in 1861 in Manchester and that the wedding details are held at Manchester Central Library. It gives a ref number as follows: RM/50/148.

Is anyone able to check this out if they are nearby at all please?

Thanks, Luke

Providing someone is able to look at the registers the marriage is showing as December qtr 1861

ADDED Lancashire BMD shows it as  'Manchester Register Office or Registrar Attended'

I have a feeling that the reference number you have quoted may only be helpful if you are ordering the certificate.  For someone to look it up for you I would have thought that they will need to know exactly where the marriage took place. It is listed as register office or registrar attended, the latter is obviously not a C of E church.

You may have to purchase the certificate

It is listed as register office or registrar attended, so Luke cannot have a lookup because there is no parish register copy of the certificate to look at. But you do apply to Manchester Central Library for the certificate, with the reference quoted, because they also hold the older Register Office volumes and issue any required certificates.

(However if the Registrar attended a Catholic church, then his volume records the official ceremony and the church will have it's own record of the religious ceremony. The latter may have lots of detail or it may simply have names and witnesses names, but it also may be in a more obscure archive, or may not have been deposited anywhere! It doesn't sound like that will apply in this case.)

This doesn’t help, I know but I didn’t know about it.
If you click on the reference, and then ‘View Page’, it shows the two marriages on the register page.
Emmeline Barnes and Walter Dean’s marriage can be found in ‘ Manchester, England, Non-Conformist Marriages, 1758-1937’ at Newton Heath Wesleyan Methodist but I can’t see our couple there.

heywood; I  remember finding that some years back and seem to have forgotten about it. I don't think it ever helped me though. Always say you never know, though.
