Help with a common surname!
« on: Monday 26 February 24 06:44 GMT (UK) »
Morning all.

I’ve lurked on here for a few years but never had the need to write my own post, until now!

I buy cheap WW1 medals and try and reunite them with living family members.

I (arguably stupidly) purchased a VM and BWM belonging to an Edward Jones, probably of London.
His regiment number was 705262 and he was in the 23rd London Regiment.

*begin laughter*

I have located his Medal Card and Medal Roll, but that is all.

I have no other details about his age or birth location.

I know there will be some people on here who will have some ingenious tricks up their sleeves to try and help.

I may have gone too far this time, but I have once located a Jones, so nothing is impossible.

Hi
I'm probably way off with this reply (I'm not great with army stuff  :-[ ) but your post intrigued me + I like a puzzle  :)

On Edward Jones' Medal + Award Roll there is also John Jones + George Edwin Jones - the same regiment + same dates of theatres of war served.

There is a family on the 1911 census - address 69 Furley St, Peckham, Camberwell London

Head: Henry Jones 48 - Soho London
Wife: Ellen Jones 43 - Chelsea London
Son: John Jones 20 - Chelsea London
Son: Edward Jones 18 - Chelsea London
Son George Jones 12 - Peckham London

It's probably not your Edward Jones but just a coincidence that I had fun looking into :)

Regards
Deb

Lawton - Blackhall - Sharp - Haddow - Smith - Cunningham - Rowley - Treling

It’s something I can look into, so thank you.

From a Quick look the regimental numbers had just been assigned in alphabetical order based on surname.

However, it could be that there is a link between the Jones’s.

Something for me to look into, as I’ve nothing better to go on!

Thanks.

Numbers were based on joining date.
When the Territorial Force was re-numbered in 1917, the 23rd Londons were allocated six digit numbers within the range 700001 to 720000. Men who were already serving in the battalion were given new numbers, as were men who were missing in action but not confirmed dead. The man with the lowest original TF number was given the lowest six digit number and so on, so the sequential numbering practice carried on into the six digit series.

Numbers were based on joining date not surnames.

That’s what I thought, but the regimental names/numbers on this medal roll are oddly alphabetical!

Maybe lots of people joined on the same day and therefore they allocated them alphabetically.

If they were issued based on joining date then it does add some weight to three brothers joining on the same day.
