Is it a birth or death record?  You could check the 1881 census for Charles Street.

Thanks for that - another branch to investigate - now has Devonshire Place been demolished or is it just known as Charles Street - it looks a well established road on google streetview but I'm no expert on architecture  ;D

The Charles Street area is undeveloped on the large scale town plan of 1875 (i.e. the street doesn’t exist).

In the first newspaper reference that I have found (1881: sale of Nos. 11, 12, 13) the address is Devonshire Place, Charles Street, New Town Estate. The three houses are described as "brick-built-and-slated freehold houses with gardens" and they are occupied by tenants.

References to Devonshire Place have disappeared in the 1891 census. There are  newspaper references to "Devonshire Place, Charles Street" from 1881 to 1885 only.

My guess is that the houses were fairly new in 1881 and that the street names and numbering were revised before 1891. It seems unlikely that houses built in the late 1870's would have been demolished soon enough to have been replaced by the houses that can be seen now in Charles Street.
