Twin BARNES brothers 1920 Camberwell. Who was their father?
« on: Monday 26 February 24 20:50 GMT (UK) »

Births Sep 1920   (>99%)
Barnes    John S L    Cartr [spelling]    Camberwell    1d   1520
Barnes    William M L  Carter    Camberwell    1d   1520

I believe their father died when they were aged about 12 [1932/3]
and their mother might be:
Rosa Garlick Carter
1891–1987
BIRTH 19 APR 1891 • London, England
DEATH SEP 1987 • St Ives, PENZANCE, Cornwall
but so far I do not have her marriage to a Mr Barnes.

Look for them on the 1921 census which will show parents names or buy a pdf copy of one of the birth certs for £2.50.

Parents may possibly not have married

The 1921 census also shows a daughter (age 4, born Ireland). Could the mother have married in Ireland?

Is this Rosa in the London, Kelly's Post Office Directory, 1916.
Listed under Artists (same occupation as in the 1921 census).

Carter Miss Rosa , 53 Marloes Road, Kens W

Ah, Ashtone, that does give me a new  direction.

As I do not have access to the 1921 census, presumably the Irish born daughter aged 4 is also a BARNES?
Very interesting that you have found them in the Arts.  Perhaps they were performers on tour.

Older daughter = Joan Barnes born 1917 (age 4) in Cork, Cork, Ireland. John and William born in Dulwich, Surrey and mother Rose (Artist Painter) born in 1891 (age 30) London/Kent (I wonder if it is Cowden, Kent?) but no husband shown.

Interesting that Head is left blank yet Rose is shown as wife/married and the parents of all three children are shown as both alive. Joan is shown as English.

Her paintings and exhibits are mentioned quite a lot in newspapers. Her first exhibit was in 1934.

See The East Kent Times and Mail (06 October 1937) for a nice overview of her work and travels.
