Deciphering Royal Marine service record section
« on: Tuesday 27 February 24 13:12 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to work out what is written in a section of a service record. ln the picture, there is a Wounds and Hurts section which looks like it has been covered over or the writing is very faint. It starts with 22/23... I suspect this is connected to an attack on Zeebrugge and Ostend on the 22/23 April 1918 that he was involved in but I have no idea what follows.

This picture was just a screenshot but I have a PDF of the actual record if it helps.

"Took part in attack on Zeebrugge Belgium"

I can't read the next bit that starts "C E......"

Below that: "Awarded 1914-15 Star"

Thanks for your thoughts on the text. It's really not clear what the C E part might be!

Isn't it more interesting that this chap lost out on a V.C. which was awarded by ballot?

This was the last (to date) award of V.C.s by ballot.

That first section specifically says he took part in the raid on Zebrugge and Ostend.

Agree, except I don't think it is "C. E...."  But "L. G..." - another reference to the London Gazette entry for the attack on Zebrugge.

Thanks Wexflyer!

It's certainly an interesting story well known in the Royal Marines world. A midnight raid on Zeebrugge in an attempt to blockade the port used by German submarines. Not terribly successful but very daring. The men were asked to vote for who they thought should get the VCs.

I had wondered whether there was any further information about injuries sustained in the attack but seemingly not. For whatever reason this section of the service record was used for other information.

I think you are spot on with the LG deciphering!

Thanks again.
