Richard Clayton North Wheatley
« on: Wednesday 28 February 24 08:53 GMT (UK) »
I am currently tracing my wife’s 5 x Great grandfather, Richard Clayton 1739- July 1819, North Wheatley, Nottinghamshire .He married Anne Smith, 11th May 1760, North Wheatley, Notts. They had six children:
Elizabeth 1761
Ann 1763
George 1765-1770
Mary 1771
Richard 1774-1844
Thomas 1777-1857
I have recently obtained a will for Richard Clayton 1739-1819 from the Borthwick Institute and am trying to match the will to the above family. The Will was made on 23rd June 1813 and past 25th February 1820.
The main beneficiary is Richard Clayton 1774-1844 (eldest surviving son)
Son Thomas Clayton £100
Daughter Elizabeth £160
Daughter Ann the wife of Charles Hudson 1 Guinea
3 grandchildren of my late daughter Mary £10 a piece
All the children match nicely with the Will but I would like to confirm Ann Clayton marriage to Charles Hudson just to make sure I have the right will and family, I cannot however find a marriage anywhere?
Many thanks

Ann was a widow when she married Charles Hudson.

Ann Clayton m William Shaw East Retford 18 May 1788, Ann of North Wheatley.
Ann Shaw m Charles Hudson East Retford 6 Jul 1801. Charles widower, Ann of Clarebro (Clarborough), which is midway between North Wheatley and Retford.

Hope this helps.

William Shaw was probably buried Clarborough 1797 - taken from Nottinghamshire Burial Index.

Trying to “ dot the i’s and cross the t’s” but I am struggling to find Mary Clayton born 1771 and died before 1813 when the Will was written and referred to as “late” also had 3 children. So looking for a marriage somewhere post 1789, having 3 children and died before 1813?

Mary Clayton, a spinster of Wheatley, in the county of Nottingham, and Robert Sykes, bachelor, weaver, were married by licence on 7th April 1794 in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire.

I'm thinking they moved to Barnsley, Yorkshire, as there are a few likely matching baptisms there. Bishop's Transcripts for the parish are in poor condition, unfortunately, so not all names can be read.

A Mary Sykes, wife of Robert, was buried on 14th May 1813 aged 40 in Barnsley.

Children born to a Robert and Mary Sykes in the right time frame include:

Sarah, baptised 1796 in North Wheatley.
Matthew, baptised 1799 in Barnsley.
Nancy, baptised 1802 '' ''

There are some in Wakefield, Yorkshire but I'm thinking that's a different couple.

Then another two possibles in Barnsley whose names are illegible.

EDIT: Changed Richard to Robert, as I intended.

Thanks very much Queenofthewest. Forgive me did you mean Robert and not Richard in your last post?

My apologies; I did indeed. I read 'Richard Clayton' in the title and had a bit of a brain fart!

I will amend.
