Martin of Tipton
« on: Wednesday 28 February 24 14:58 GMT (UK) »
I have recently realised I had been barking up the wrong tree. I am now on the correct branch. To be sure I have researched both branches but now wish to find out more to make sure.
I finally found the correct parents for my great grandfather on my main line. I just need to clarify b/d for them. On my great grandfather's parish record it gives his parents as William Martin and Ann ? By looking at census I have found him with William Martin b 1828 in Tipton and Ann b 1833 in Tipton and from my great grandfathers bc I have his parents as William Martin and Ann Armstrong- I have further found a marriage for these two in Old Swinford. Please can someone help me find both William Martin and Ann Armstrongs birth and death records. All help is much appreciated thank you in advance x

Hi bit confused here

If its the couple living in Tipton in 1871 it gives Williams place of birth as Worcestershire and Ann's as Shropshire and if it is the marriage on 6.2.1853 at Old Swinford this gives her maiden name as Cartwright not Armstrong

1901 William gives his birth place as Brierley Hill

Thank you Willow. Yes this is them. I have been thrown of their trail once before. I found before they were married she had already had a child called Cartwright who later went as both Armstrong and Martin. Not sure if she actually married a Mr Cartwright or just went as that name but there was one next door on an earlier census. There are some Armstrong baptisms in Old Swinford which is under Worcs and they could possibly be her siblings. Also William says Dudley as well as Tipton which are side by side in Geography but Dudley as come under both Tipton and Dudley. My great grandfather John Edwards birth came under Tipton but the address was in Dudley x

Ok that makes more sense as you say she gives the surname of both Armstrong and Cartwright I wonder if was her mother who married twice? (Just had something similar on another thread) and that is where the confusion of surnames comes from. Anyway we have off FreeReg

baptism 13.1.1828 at St Michael Brierley Hill William Martin son of Benjamin a Miner of Brierley Hill and Mercy his wife twin of John

marriage 6.2.1853 at St Mary Oldswinford William Martin 24 bachelor and miner of The Lye father Benjamin Martin miner to Ann Cartwright spinster of The Lye father Benjamin Cartwright miner witnesses Joseph Martin and Martha Cartwright

I will look some more

Thank you Willow. This is interesting and now I am getting dizzy lol. In 1841 I have found something (different - my tree is getting many alternatives) I found William 15 b Staffs living in Tipton parents Thomas and Hannah. So the marriage throws that out of the window if my confusing theory is right. One census gives Worcs, another brilliant and another  Shropshire- the Thomas suspect father in 1841 says he was b in Dawley Magma. I think I need to ascertain the marriage is correct as could be two William and Ann's out there x

The family on the 1871 & 1881 census the mothers maiden name for the kids is definitely Armstrong. I could be they didnt marry which is always a pain in the butt but the baptism in 1828 does fit with William

I'm just trying to chase Ann in earlier census to see what I can find
