help with identifying unknown uniforms
« on: Wednesday 28 February 24 22:54 GMT (UK) »
I think this is WW1 era but I might be completely wrong.  It's come to light among my late aunt's possessions and the man on the left has a real family resemblance but I have no idea who it might be.  The family were from Stocksbridge near Sheffield, West Riding of Yorkshire, but those aren't the York & Lancaster badges which was the "usual" regiment for the locals to enlist in.  I'd appreciate any comments about this, which might help me to try and work out who is on it.
Pearson (Bradwell Dby & Stocksbridge)
Donkersley
Crawshaw (Bradfield)
Evans (Bradwell Dby and Stocksbridge)
Crossley (Penistone)
Rogers (Nottinghamshire & Stocksbridge)
Poynton / Pointon (Derbyshire)
Day (Barnsley WRY and Iowa USA)
Scargill (Barnsley)

They are wearing the cap badge of The Duke of Wellington's Regiment (West Riding).

However, and somewhat curiously, they are not wearing the Regiment's collar badges (these were Indian elephants). They seem to be wearing grenade collar badges suggesting Royal Artillery or Royal Engineers (I always confuse the two).

Good luck with your research.

58th RA regt was previously DofW regt.  I would suggest they are of that regiment wearing RA collars but DofW regt cap badge.  Also The 5th Duke of Wellington's was one unit becoming 43rd (5th Duke of Wellington's) Anti-Aircraft Battalion, RE on 10 December 1936, retaining its Duke of Wellington's cap badge.
