Scanned images of the original roll (dated 19 April 1869) of 455 officers and men of the 57th Regiment who were entitled to receive the New Zealand Medal. Names are listed alphabetically within rank giving regimental numbers, period of service in the field in New Zealand, years served, occasional remarks as to character on discharge.  Also contains a ‘working roll’ of the officers and men listing ranks, transfers, death or discharge, etc.

The website http://www.lynly.gen.nz/index.htm includes a series of databases featuring the names and précis information (but occasionally also transcriptions of correspondence relating to unsuccessful medal applications, many quite illuminating) of 694 soldiers who deserted while serving in New Zealand.

This title gives potted biographies of selected colonists who distinguished themselves during the New Zealand War of 1860–1870. This website, run by the History Programme, Victoria University of Wellington, is the gateway to a wealth of new information about the realities of New Zealand colonial military service, including research topics, blogs, and essays (see Research Explorations).
Perhaps of greatest value to those researching Imperial soldiers is the searchable database of 11, 979 men taken from the New Zealand Medal Lists (War Office, WO 100/18, The National Archives, London).  Users may also log in and download the large file, available for free for one month.

Waikato Campaign Photograph Album, 1867.
The Waikato Museum, Grantham Street, Hamilton, holds a photograph album dating to 1867 which contains at least 30-40 photos of soldiers of the Maori War and also wives and some children. Most individuals are named. The album may be requested to view.
