I'm looking at his great great grandfather Thomas Henderson , who was born on 18th September 1856. I have a baptism for him on 12 October 1856 in Tanfield In Durham. Father George Henderson, mother Francis.

Just wondering.....as it seems you haven't yet seen the 1881 West Ham Thomas's marriage certificate, how do you know that his father was called George?

What is your evidence for his exact date of birth in September 1856?

Thank you Alan  :)

Meggiejayne, I think you have the wrong baptism. The Thomas in West Ham in 1881 consistently gives his place of birth as Newcastle upon Tyne right up to the 1921 census.

He appears to have been living  in Barking, Essex, in 1871.

Take a look at RG 10 / 1647/ 84/9. Thomas, born Newcastle upon Tyne, occupation, Iron moulder, (same as in 1881) with his parents James and Jane Henderson.

I think you might be right. I found a marriage for Thomas and Elizabeth Morgan and Thomas lists his father as James. I think then that my husband has in fact been going down the wrong tree as it were. I'm assuming that he has copied this information from other family trees without checking the facts.

So the 1871 Thomas I have born in Tanfield is the wrong one.

Thank you I will go and investigate that avenue.

If the 1881 Thomas in West Ham is the ‘correct’ person, then I think you’re right.

He’s in Barking in 1871 and in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1861.

Also its most unlikely that someone born and raised in Tanfield would suddenly and consistently state that they’d been born in Newcastle.

The 1881 Thomas is the correct one. All the children match up properly and I have his son's birth certificate (my husband's great father ) which all matches. Morgan is mother's maiden name

I've now found the marriage entry for Thomas and Elizabeth Morgan on 13th August 1877 and his father is listed as James Henderson, a Smith.

It did seem strange that the POBs were consistent from 1881 onwards and had different before then. I also found a grave for 'George and Francis' and buried with them were a number of their children which didn't match with what I had.

My husband is a pain for just copying without checking facts and documents. He did this with his maternal line and I had to correct it all.

So it looks like he may not be descended from Scottish nobility after all although I suppose still could be just down a different Henderson line.

Does anyone have the link to those Census returns as I'm searching and can't seem to find them.

Thank you

Here's the 1871 census https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VFF2-YSF
James's occupation Engine Smith, which fits nicely with the marriage certificate occupation.

And here's the 1861 https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M7FZ-5JB

May I suggest a severe telling off  :-X

I think the Thomas Henderson baptised in Tanfield married Elizabeth Harris in 1880 and was still living in Tanfield parish in 1881

RG 11/4941/20/38
152, Havanna
Thomas Henderson, head, 24, m, coal miner, Durham Tanfield
Elizabeth do, wife, 21, Cornwall, Lincolnhorn
Elizabeth Harris, mother in law, w, 59, Cornwall Guwinyar (?Gwinear)

Guess that explains the confusion in the tree.

However I've now found Thomas' actual birth and baptism in Newcastle so managed to tie all the Census returns, birth, and marriage altogether. Just now got to update the tree with the correct details.
