Margaret Thomson birth 1854
« on: Thursday 29 February 24 18:33 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone,
I'm hoping someone can help trace the birth of Margaret Thomson. Her marriage to Charles Wyper in 1881 gives her fathers name as William Thomson and her mother as Annie ??? (see attachment for name, I cant decipher it).

In the 1861 Scottish census she is aged 8 (so born about 1853) living with William and Ann in Lanark

When & where did Margaret die?  Does her death reg/cert shows her mothers maiden name any clearer?

Please post full 1861 details as you haven't given any details of when or where her parents were born or whether the 1861 shows any other children?

Have you looked at pre- 1855 births on SP for Margaret or any of her siblings to determine her mmn

If Margaret died 1912 - SP shows mmn Newbiggin.  See SP - possible 1853 marriage for parents

Hi Carole,

yes I looked at SP, can't find the death (too many options). Looking at the maiden name of Margaret's mother on the attachment on the original post it looks like 'Nebukin', do you think it could be 'Newbigging' and the census taker wrote it as he heard it ?

Was she in Dalserf on the 1911 census - if so the death I mentioned above is very likely.

Download the death cert to see if husband matches

Mary Tomson, 8, is in the 1861 census in a close off the West Port, (parish of) Lanark, Lanarkshire.

She has younger siblings Mary, 4 and John, 1, both born in (the parish of) Lanark. The births index at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk lists among many others Mary Thomson, born 1857, and John Thomson, born 1859, both with mother's maiden surname Newbigging. So that does seem to be the most conventional spelling of Annie's surname.

In 1871 the family are in Linnville (Parish of) Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire, but William is now a widower.

Ann Newbigging or Thomson, mother's maiden surname Welsh, died in (the parish of) Lanark in 1861, aged 30.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

There is a monumental inscription in the old Saint Kentigern's churchyard in Lanark town, this has the surname Neubikin, translatable nowadays to Newbigging.
This name is, of course, very local to Lanark, the hamlet of Newbigging is just east of the village of Carnwath.
The inscription in Lanark churchyard is for the family of John Neubikin, smith in Lanark and his family. He died 1708 aged 63 years.
