transportation from Campbeltown to India late 1700s to mid 1800s
« on: Saturday 02 March 24 04:19 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I have been trying to research my tree with the origins in (we believe) Campbeltown, or somewhere within Argyllshire.  Surname HALL - my Father's side of the family originated from Scotland to Madras late 1700s thru to around mid 1800s.  Does anyone know the method of transport a person would use, also would vessels leave from Port Glasgow perhaps to India?  I am not having any success.  Any advice on what websites to use (I have subscriptions with Ancestry, FindMyPast and use LDS quite a bit) any research knowledge that could help me I would be most grateful, thanking you Linda, South Australia

Transportation means the shipping of criminals to the colonies.
You are asking about transport: not the same thing!
Bagwell of Kilmore & Lisronagh, Co. Tipperary;  Beatty from Enniskillen;  Brown from Preston, Lancs.;  Burke of Ballydugan, Co. Galway;  Casement in the IoM and Co. Antrim;  Davison of Knockboy, Broughshane;  Frobisher;  Guillemard;  Harrison in Co. Antrim and Dublin;  Jones around Burton Pedwardine, Lincs.;  Lindesay of Loughry;  Newcomen of Camlagh, Co. Roscommon;  Shield;  Watson from Kidderminster;  Wilkinson from Leeds

This article might be of interest for shipping from the mid 1800s onwards.

Have you tried FIBIS (Families in British India Society) their database is free to search although you have to join them to see the information held.

Hi RJ Paton, yes, I have been a member for around 13 years with FIBIS.  I do find their website helpful over the years.  You have prompted me to take another look.  I started with them on voluntary basis before records really became online.  Cheers & Thank you Linda.
