Mary Elizabeth GRAHAM, born Maryport c1883
« on: Saturday 02 March 24 08:21 GMT (UK) »
Hello. I am wondering if one of you kind people with knowledge of Cumberland could please help with this.

Mary Elizabeth GRAHAM was born around 1883 in Maryport, Cumberland, the daughter of Joseph GRAHAM. I know this from her marriage registration (under the name Mary Elizabeth MCGOVERN in South Australia in 1928). She married on 3 November 1928 aged 45 years (birth c1883). She died on 19 December 1980 aged 97 years (birth c1883). Further details on sources are available here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Graham-16368.

I am unclear which registration district Maryport would have been in, as Maryport itself is not a district (https://www.freebmd.org.uk/county-map.html).

Assuming the approximate year of birth and locality are correct, she could be one of the following (From FreeBMD):

Surname    First name(s)        District    Vol    Page
Births Mar 1882   (>99%)
GRAHAM    Mary Elizabeth        Penrith    10b   396
GRAHAM    Mary Elizabeth         Cockermouth    10b   510
Births Jun 1882   (>99%)
GRAHAM    Mary Elizabeth         Whitehaven    10b   601
Births Sep 1882   (>99%)
GRAHAM    Mary Elizabeth         Carlisle    10b   494
Births Dec 1883   (>99%)
GRAHAM    Mary Elizabeth         Cockermouth    10b   556
GRAHAM    Mary Elizabeth         Carlisle    10b   481
Births Mar 1884   (>99%)
Graham    Mary Elizabeth         Penrith    10b   446
Births Sep 1884   (>99%)
GRAHAM    Mary Elizabeth         Longtown    10b   490

Thanks for any guidance

If so it looks like the childrens' births were registered in Cockermouth RD, mother's maiden name Wallace.

GRAHAM    Mary Elizabeth     W. Derby       8b   868
McGOVERN    James                 W.Derby    8b   868

Above is a 1909 marriage. At 1911, the census for this couple records Mary as born in Maryport, Cumberland.

Corresponding entry in Catholic marriage record at St Anne's, Liverpool, names her father as Joseph Graham.
