Cycle Race Medal
« on: Saturday 02 March 24 12:38 GMT (UK) »
I'm hoping someone might be able to tell me something about this medal which was won by my great great uncle who lived in Liverpool. The photo isn't focussed well, so I'll tell you that it reads: A.B.C. Road Race 1892 (and on the back it is engraved "E.W. Wynne 200 miles in 12 hours")

Who were A.B.C. and is there information about them available?

Possibly Anfield Bicycle Club - formed 1879 according to this -

I also found this -

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
Remember - "They'll be found when they want to be found" !!!
If you don't ask the question, you won't get an answer.

Appleyard - WRY

Looking at the newspapers I noted several clubs (eg Kendal, Swindon) with A.B.C road races. Appears it stands for Amateur Bicycle Club.

An item in the 1st September 1890 edition of the Liverpool Mercury reports on the final race, in that season, of the Oakfield Cycling Club and presents the result of a 25 mile race from Knotty Ash to Sankey Bridge and back again. The report mentions that "Messrs. E.W Wynne and Dent .. acted as starters, judges &c"

Added: That’s Liverpool to Warrington.

It doesn’t sound to me that it was presented for an actual race but more likely a “randonnee” where cyclists ride independently or in groups aiming to complete the course within a specified time - in this case 200 miles within a 12 hour time period.
