William Jones & family 1891 & 1911 census help please
« on: Sunday 03 March 24 12:08 GMT (UK) »
Good morning,

I have a William Jones born 23.08.1832 baptised 27.03.1833 Tredegar Penuel Chapel Calvinistic Methodist.

He married Ellen Thomas in 1871 in Newport. I have researched and found their children, all registered Newport M 11a, appearing in the census info. I appreciate there is a big gap between 1877-1885 but surname Jones births with the maiden name Thomas has alot of birth possibilities  ;D:

Margaret Ellen Jones b: 1872
Lydia Elizabeth Jones b: 1875
William Osbourn Charles Jones b: 1877
Hannah Jones b: 1885
Ethel Matilda b: 1889

I have found the below census details:

1881 census Living at Ty Canol Farm Lower Machen Monmouth
William Jones M 48yrs b: Marshfield Butcher
Ellen Jones 38yrs b: Hereford, England Wife
Margaret Ellen Jones DA 9yrs b: Risca, Monmouth Scholar - married in 1897
Lilly Elizabeth Jones DA 7yrs b: Risca, Monmouth Scholar
William Jones SO 4yrs b: Machen, Monmouth Scholar

I have been unable to locate any of them in the 1891 census.

1901 census 164 Portmanmoor Road Roath Glamorgan
William Jones HD M 68yrs Butcher b: Marshfield
Ellen Jones WI M 54yrs b: Hereford Ross
William O Jones SO 13yrs Wood Sawyer b: Machen-found in 1911 census emigrated to Canada in 1911
Hannah Jones DA 15yrs Domestic Servant b: Machen
Ethel Jones DA 11yrs b: Cardiff
John Jones Boarder W 50yrs Blacksmith
Lilly Wilson DA M 26yrs Domestic Servant b: Risca

I have been unable to locate any Lilly/Lily/Lydia E Jones marrying a WILSON in Wales or the UK.

I have been unable to locate William/Ellen Jones in the 1911 census for Monmouthshire or Glamorganshire/Cardiff.

I have been unable to locate Lilly/Lily/Lydia E Jones aka WILSON in the 1911 census for Monmouthshire or Glamorganshire/Cardiff and the UK.

I have been unable to find Hannah or Ethel Matilda but there's every chance they've married and that's going to take some research and a few wrong certicates lol

I have found the below death which could be related to mine but I thought Cardiff would be the death registration district just because of their location in 1901:

William Jones Jun qtr 1911 Newport M 11a pge 106 79yrs-1832
Ellen Jones Mar qtr 1915 Newport M 11a pge 434 68yrs-1847

Any look ups for the 1891/1911 census or thoughts would be appreciated thank you.

regards,

Sarah

Margaret looks to be living in as a servant to the Treharne family of Newport Road in 1891 (transcribed by Ancestry as Ireharne)

Hi Mabel,

Thank you for your reply, I have added this to Margaret's family history after finding it.
I also with through all the 97 pages of the Roath District 4a to see if I could find any Jones or Wilsons.
There was 1 family of Wilsons whose sons did not marry a Jones and there where very few Jones living/working in that district but I did notice that some written Jones looked like James.

regards,

Sarah

I think they moved about quite a bit. I've searched the two addresses we have found on the Welsh newspaper archive. Nothing for Russell St, however H Jones of 164 Portmanmoor Road signed up for a newspaper's children's club in 1898 - presumably Hannah. There were different people at the address in 1896 and 1904

Also, bit of a long shot. Lilly E Jones b Newport working in Newport as a draper's assistant in 1891?

Piece 4372, folio 15, p23

They do seem a bit difficult to find - maybe they also emigrated?

Hi Mabel,

:D the information for Hannah thank you so much, it's intriguing.

They did seem to move around and yes I wondered if they emigrated and have explored that using Ancestry and Find My Past but have found nothing concrete to confirm this.

;D I think I may claim your find for Lilly E Jones as her.

Thank you again for these great research discoveries.

regards,

Sarah
