Waldo Fish and Fur Company
« on: Sunday 03 March 24 17:05 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for any newspaper reference to Asel Waldo or the "Waldo Fish and Fur Company."  This company, if it actually existed, operated in Wisconsin [Marquette, Columbia and/or Dodge Counties] in about 1905-1915.  From about 1915 to 1930 it operated in Traverse County, Minnesota and adjacent Roberts and Marshall Counties, South Dakota.

Asel Waldo was variously described as a fisherman, a commercial fisherman or a fish and fur merchant.

Thanks, Sandra.  He sounds like a bit of a slippery character.  However, that does confirm that he was running some sort of business in Fox Lake, Dodge County in 1913.  Several of my Chapman relatives worked for him as fishermen starting in Fox Lake in 1910 and then later out in South Dakota up until at least the mid-1920s.

Any sign of him or his business out in South Dakota or Minnesota?

Thanks, amondg.  I had the census data.  I was really hoping for some newspaper report or advertisement that would indicate what they were fishing for and what gear they were using.

Carp.  Well, that's what I was guessing.  Thanks for confirming it.  It's a shame they didn't put a bigger dent in the population.
