Edinburgh - John Gilchrist born 1848
« on: Sunday 03 March 24 17:32 GMT (UK) »
I appreciate this will be a longshot of how to find the parents of John Gilchrist and any siblings. He married Mary Ann Simon in Leeds in 1868. He was a Forgeman. I suspect my best option will be to get a copy of his marriage certificate. All help will be appreciated.

John Gilchrist married Mary Ann Senior, not Simon

Ancestry has their marriage. They married 4 October 1868 in Hunslet, Yorkshire. Both of them were living in Ivory Street, Hunslet, at the time. John was a clock & watch maker and his father, also a John Gilchrist, was a clock & watch maker. Mary Ann's father was John Senior, a mason.

John Gilchrist appeared, aged 3, at home at 5 Haugh Street in Edinburgh in the 1851 Census returns. His parents and siblings were all recorded as born Edinburgh. John 27, watchmaker, Margaret 27, Margaret 6, Robert 5, John 3, Joseph 1.

A Margaret Gilchrist was born 22 May 1844 and baptised 9 August 1844 to John Gilchrist, watchmaker, 119 Causewayside, Edinburgh, and Margaret Wells in the Parish of St Cuthbert's. There is no record of a baptism for any of the other children.

John was living at 20 Gifford Park Edinburgh, when he married Margaret Wells of 119 Causewayside, Edinburgh, daughter of the late John Wells, labourer there. They married on 1 January 1844.

Thank you for your help that I have now followed through to the present day. Is it possible to follow the Gilchrist line in Scotland, i.e. thanks to your help we know that John born 1824 and his wife 1824. Is it possible to find the birth record of John, born 1824. Are there any records of the family in the 1861 census.

This looks like parents and brother in 1861:

John Gilchrist 45 carter b. Edinburgh
Margaret Gilchrist 40 b. Edinburgh
Joseph Gilchrist 13 Son Prentise shoemaker b. Edinburgh

Address: Cowan's Close, St Cuthbert's, Newington, Midlothian

John and Margaret, parents' ages in 1851 show them as 36 and 38. 1861 they are 45 and 40. So likely born around 1815 or a few years either side.

Marriage or banns date:

Margaret Wells and John Gilchrist
Marriage 1 Jan 1844 Saint Cuthberts, Edinburgh
Father of bride John Wells

You need to take some care when looking around as there looks to be another couple, John Gilchrist and Margaret Gordon who also married in Edinburgh in 1844.

Margaret Gordon and John Gilchrist
Marriage 3 Jun 1844 Saint Cuthberts, Edinburgh
Father of bride John Gordon

eilthireach's find earlier of the christening of daughter Margaret in 1844, with mother showing as Wells, has helped to confirm the family in the 1851 census.  It does muddy the waters though. There is a marriage and a death in Edinburgh for a Joseph G, but mother is showing as Margaret Gordon not Wells and father John is showing as a carter. This is that family in 1851:

John Gilchrist 36 carter
Margaret Gilchrist 38
William Gilchrist   15
John Gilchrist 10
Joseph Gilchrist 3

Address 20-2 Gifford Park, Edinburgh

Similar children's names. I think the 1861 census entry I posted earlier might be with mother Margaret Gordon, not Wells  :-\

1851
John Gilchrist 36 carter
Margaret Gilchrist 38
William Gilchrist   15
John Gilchrist 10
Joseph Gilchrist 3

Address 20-2 Gifford Park, Edinburgh

John was living at 20 Gifford Park Edinburgh, when he married Margaret Wells of 119 Causewayside, Edinburgh, daughter of the late John Wells, labourer there. They married on 1 January 1844.

Now I am truly confused between both couples  ;D The address showing on the 1851 census (with Margaret Gordon and family) is the same as for John Gilchrist when he married Margaret Wells in 1844.
