They married 4 October 1868 in Hunslet, Yorkshire. Both of them were living in Ivory Street, Hunslet, at the time. John was a clock & watch maker and his father, also a John Gilchrist, was a clock & watch maker. Mary Ann's father was John Senior, a mason.

1851 St Cuthberts - This John is a clock maker

and in the same John in 1841 before marriage

Thank you all for your valued input. I struggled to understand why John came down to Leeds and on the marriage cert at St Jude, Pottery Field, Hunslet, Leeds it states father and son were watch/clock makers. Where they boarded is near the railway freight station and in the cenus records over 30 years it shows Charles and his sons as working in the forge/ironworks. Did he come to Leeds looking for work, did he have any relatives there. Gideon Yard, Leeds had properties owned by the railway company where the Gilchrist family lived for a time. I had hoped more that 1 Gilchrist had come down to Leeds from Scotland. Many thanks,

As you research your Gilchrist tree further, and extend sideways, you may be able to answer some of those questions. You may find cousins or siblings also in the Leeds area. It is possible that they moved for work - the story of many during the industrial revolution.

Thank you. I am looking backwards and sideways, in the hope of finding some clues. Even if I can find the 1861 census, it may not be of much help, as John would have been 12.
