Village name from 1851 census
« on: Monday 04 March 24 09:59 GMT (UK) »
I am hoping someone with excellent reading skills can read a village name in the 1851 census.
Here are the details:
HO107/2152/509 p 18
It is John Garlick, aged 61, living in Charlesworth, Derbyshire.
Ancestry have transcribed his birthplace as 'Sunwich', which I cannot find on a map.
Familysearch have transcribed it as 'Ludworth', which I know exists but to me it doesn't look like Ludworth.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.
Chris.

This doesn't help clarify the place name, but there is a John Garlick born 5 Sep 1791 & baptised 28 Dec 1791 in Charlesworth - parents Joseph and Suffiah

Could it be Simmondley? which is not very far from Charlesworth if you look on the map.

I'd plumped for Simondly - I think he's there in '41?

I agree. Susannah JACKSON on page 21 is also born there, they have just cut the end of the word off on John's.

I think it's most like Ludworth

Glossop from Genuki
Quote
The parish includes the townships of Charlesworth, Chisworth, Chunall, Chinley, Dinting, Hayfield, Ludworth, Mellor, New Mills, Padfield, Simondley, Whitfield, and several hamlets The inhabitants of the parish are for the most part employed in the cotton mills, calico printing works, paper mills, and iron foundries.

Thanks everyone for your insight.
I can see 'Simondley' now, which I couldn't see before.
And I think the 1841 cross-reference proves it.
Appreciate all you help.
Regards,
Chris.

He is - Glossop, Piece 185, Book 15, Folio 19, Page number 21
Higher up the page is the family of Thomas and Mary with whom he is living in 1851.
