Margaret Gilchrist appears to be a Tailoress/Clothier.

Really appreciate the newspaper cuttings. I wonder there is an obituary for her husband, or one for her.

The 13 July 1867 newspaper clipping that Sandra provided doesn't suggest that John snr was dead by that date. I've seen similar newspapers entries of that "debt" and "credit" nature where the spouse in question had simply left the relationship. My money is still on John snr (watchmaker) in NYC 1870-1880.

I agree with Ashtone regarding the husband John Gilchrist in New York .On one of the children's birth certificates it has place of birth for the father as Edinburgh ..Not been able to find anything else on John after 1880 census maybe Sandra can help

Many thanks. Joseph Gilchrist, born Edinburgh 1850, son of Margaret & John, was also a Watch Maker. Died of consumption 1869, Hunslet. He was single. He should show up in Watchmakers adverts, in the Leeds press.

Many thanks. I did have a look through all the Leeds graveyards, for any Gilchrist names. Joseph was registered as a Leeds watchmaker in one of historic records for Leeds clock & watchmakers.
