Will try and get round to this. It becomes a much easier job when you have narrowed the search window.

Will try and get round to this.

Let us know how you get on. So, are you related to the Gilchrist family, or doing research for someone else?

The research is for a member of the Gilchrist family, as requested, and is a birthday present.

You can search the census records on familysearch.org

1870 New York

John Gilchrist age now 40 born Scotland occupation watchmaker
Elizabeth Gilchrist age 32 born Newfoundland
John Gilchrist age 1 born New York.

1880 census New York

John Gilchrist age 53 born Scotland occupation watchmaker
Elizabeth Gilchrist age32 born Canada
John Gilchrist age 11 b New York
James Gilchrist age 9 New York.
Annie Gilchrist age 4 New York.
Alexander Gilchrist age 6 months New York

Records for some of the children mothers maiden name Carey

Rosie

Well done Rosie, great you picked him up.  :) :)

No sign of deaths or burials for John and Elizbeth/Lizzie so far.  The family seem to be all split by 1900 so I suspect they both died before the next census - didn't find them in 1892 either.
Uses the same names as the sons in the UK.

Also on the 1880 census was a sister of Elizabeth, Ellen Glen.

John and Elizabeth Gilchrist  lived at 233 and John and Ellen Glen lived at 244 as per 1880 census.

You already highlighted Elizabeth or Lizzie maiden name was Carey as per the births on family search.

Ellen is listed as Ellen Kane on a sons death 25 October 1927 - Cornelius Joseph Glen. Buried
Cypress Hills National Cemetery. Section 2 Site 10038

New York, New York City Municipal Deaths, 1795-1949

Sadly the obit for Cornelius Joseph does not mention any of his siblings, just nieces etc.,

The 1900 census  Manhattan, New York City, New York  shows William Gilchrist (the son of John and Elizabeth Gilchrist)  living as a lodger with the Glen family.

Obviously tracking the Glen family to see if there are any other signs of the Gilchrist family.

John Glen passed away 26 February 1902 - Calvary Cemetery - Woodside, Queens, New York.

(From an ancestry tree - grave details - Burial 16 March 1902  Calvary Cemetery 2
Section 19, Range 14, Plot C, Grave 3)  Suspect this grave has at least 3 people. One could be a son born 1882 ??

Ellen Glen passed away 25 March 1909 but is not listed  Calvary Cemetery

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:2W96-C6T

Newfoundland, Church Records, 1793-1899

Ellen Carey - Baptism - Baptism Date   14 Jun (possibly 1850 ?)
Baptism Place   Newfoundland, Canada - daughter Thomas Carey and Ellen Mullony.

There is a death in Manhattan where the age would fit nicely.
Burial at Evergreen Cemetery but no relatives named and Elizabeth/Lizzie doesn't seem to be there.
Although means nothing.
