There are a few missing pieces of the jigsaw. If we knew the date of John's fathers death, it may make things a bit clearer. In 1861, John would have been 13, and living with family, or relatives. He was employed in a foundry, whilst living in Hunslet, an industrial region of Leeds.

Hi
Here's Joseph's burial
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/226186318/joseph-gilchrist

Gives address of George St Leeds 1869.

Robert died June 1860 Huddersfield.
Jessie 1852 -June 1872 Dewsbury
Margaret Ellen Gilchrist in the Workhouse 1911 died same year Dewsbury Dec qtr age 82.
Benjamin is at Edgerton Cemetery.

Margaret married George Oldroyd Mar qtr 1868 Hunslet
James married Birstall 22 Dec Martha Ann Bottoms both of Bristol.
Alexander June 1878 Annie Constantine
William Dec 1879 Leeds  Mary Anne Dibb or Mary Stuttart.

Checking the children's marriages(the ones I can find ) no mention of John senior being dead or him as a witness..
Censuses give Margaret as married 1871 with husband in America and 1881 widow.
The only John Gilchrist I can see is a death back in Edinburgh St Cuthberts in1873 age 46 so born c1827 at St Georges
He seems to be the John Gilchrist who entered The Royal Edinburgh Asylum 11 Sep 1861 age 35 and died 28 May 1873.
Could he have had some kind of Breakdown in 1861 and through the Poor Law been shipped back to Edinburgh?

In 1841 census he is with his parents at Berry Court Gifford Park
Robert Gilchrist 35 lab
Elizabeth 35
John 15 watch makers apprentice
Andrew 12 tailor apprentice.

I'll have another look at the US.

ps in case it helps it looks like John Gilchrist senior's mother was an Elizabeth Brown.
Marriage Liberton Elizabeth Brown d of John Brown labourer  1818 to Robert Gilchrist ploughman of Newton.

So much information. Joseph is of great interest, as he died 1869, in Leeds, 1 year after the marriage of his brother, John, in Leeds. The question had been what was John doing in Leeds, now we know there is another line of enquiry. Thank you.

Still cannot get a clear picture.  Not sure about the USA, or connections in Dewsbury, or Huddersfield. Joseph Gilchrist born 1850 Edinburgh who died 1869, in Leeds, of consumption. Shown as a Trade Watch Maker. Abode. George Street, central Leeds.

No records can be found for the family in 1861 Scotland and England the records found on the census records 1871 onwards do refer to the place of birth of Margaret Gilchrist as Edinburgh

You might be better getting a copy of birth for Thomas Gilchrist and death to see what it says

Unfortunately the statutory records didn't start until 1855 in Scotland the only one record is for the daughter Margaret Gilchrist born 1844 who married 1868 Hunslet..

Incredible and there was I thinking they may have misspelt the Gilchist surname in the 1861 census. I am sure I saw an address of Huddersfield Road, when looking through the numerous Gilchrist families.
