Saffron Walden Marriages 1869
« on: Monday 04 March 24 15:48 GMT (UK) »
I've been trying to locate a marriage of William BASSETT and Martha TAYLOR which would have happened in the Saffron Walden District about 1869. No luck on Freebmd but I noticed that unusually there are no TAYLOR marriages listed for the first three quarters of 1869.
Have they not been listed in Freebmd?

Have you tried different spellings of both surnames?

What evidence do you have that the marriage definitely happened?

Yes I have tried various spellings and by each surname separately. They were living together in 1871 and said to be married with a 11 monh old son John BASSETT whose mmn at birth was TAYLOR. Martha was too young to have been married before.

Perhaps they never married  :-\  Plenty of couples pretended to be man and wife but actually weren't.

I've just done what I should have tried before - just asked for marriages in that year without inputting any names. Lots of marriages show in each quarter so it is not a gap in Freebmd coverage.
So maybe they did not get married as suggested. Martha would have been under age which might be relevant.
William's mother was also called TAYLOR so maybe William amd Martha were related.

Ta Ladyhawk I had forgotten the 1891 census. Maybe I can connect Charles to William's mother Susan TAYLOR.
Just for the record I think Charles TAYLOR in 1891 is a Pauper not a Painter.
