Police officer shot dead Hull 1876 - any newspaper article?
« on: Monday 04 March 24 16:52 GMT (UK) »
Posting on behalf of a friend who has recently received some info about her maternal G/G/Grandfather

Can anybody find any newspaper item to support the following:

1871 census for Hull - James McCormick aged 35 born Ireland - Detective of police

Death March qtr 1876 Hull James McCormick aged 40

1881 his wife Mary is shown as a police widow.

Information is that James was shot & killed whilst on duty.  Unfortunately the original source of the info is abroad & cannot be contacted at the present time.  It's possible the info came from his death cert & if no newspaper article can be found a copy cert will be obtained to prove/disprove cause of death

There is a discussion in the Hull Packet 7th April 1876 about making a payment to the widow of Detective McCormick.  He had been a police officer in Hull for 17 years and 4 months

Many thanks to you both.  It would appear that his cause of death was not as dramatic as reported😂😂

The York Herald of November 15 1862 (page 2) has a report on the fire in which PC McCormick was seriously injured. He almost lost an arm because of a burst blood vessel but the police surgeon managed to save it.
