changes to street names in Newcastle in 1906
« on: Monday 04 March 24 17:22 GMT (UK) »
I was researching two streets in Byker for another thread and I came upon this article from 1906 listing changes to street names in Newcastle. It's always uncertain how well the OCR has worked at BNA so I thought it was worth transcribing and posting here in case anyone finds it useful in future. I've also reformatted it  from a block of text to a list for ease of reading.

12 December 1906: Newcastle Daily Chronicle

I detect a little subtlety in a few of these:
Pitt/Colliery, Norfolk/Norwich, Oak/Larch, Railway/Rhodes, West/Sunset

I came across a similar thing in Sheffield which I did not pursue to find an order, but it obviously occurred shortly after Wincobank in the parish of Ecclesfield, was transferred into the city in 1901, and certain street names duplicated those already existing.  I first noticed it on OS maps and narrowed it down to sometime between the directories of 1903 and 1905.  In this case the new names all begin with the same letter(s) as the old, making them easier to remember.  A few I recall:

Bardwell Street - Barrow Road
Chapel Street - Chapman Street
Fowler Street - Fife Street
Station Road - Standon Road
