A stray soldier spotted in Auckland St Helen Durham 1814

Whilst browsing the Bishop's Transcripts for Auckland St Helen, County Durham, I came across the following baptism:

9th October 1814, John, son of William and Anne ANDREWS, a common soldier of the 74th regiment of Foot, commanded by Major Mein.

This Highland regiment was at one of the last battles of the Napoleonic Wars; the battle of Toulouse 10th April 1814, before heading to Ireland in 1815 according to this history

Major Mein would be

Major John Alexander Mein

Born Scotland, brother of Nicholas (43rd) and William (52nd); served in India 1803 to 1805, wounded at Assaye; served in Peninsula February 1810 to June 1811; again in Peninsula January to May 1812; Major in 74th Foot 11 November 1813; subsequently Lieutenant-Colonel 20 March 1823; brevet Colonel 28 June 1838; acting Governor of Trinidad & Tobago 1838 to 1840; died at Madras November 1841.
