Probation records
« on: Tuesday 05 March 24 12:52 GMT (UK) »
Looking for some help.
I have a lady who was released in 1904 from Aylesbury prison to the family of George Dicks at Bradgate Street, Leicester under the care of DPAS (discharged parishioners aid society)
After 1904 she disappears from any records and we can't find her anywhere.
Is there anywhere that has probation records?
Her name is Selina Bodycott but also went by the alias names of Selina Bradshaw and Emma Bradshaw.
She has been previously arrested in Leicester and Leeds.
She was born 1857 in All Saints area of Leicester.
She was married to William Dicks and had 8 children with him but she also had an illegitimate daughter in 1900 to George Willoughby Dicks.

I can't find her on the following census records:
1891, 1901, 1911 or the 1939 register and unable to find a death for her.

Many thanks

She is on the 1901 census in Leicester prison, with her daughter Annie Bradshaw.

Numerous newspaper reports of her stealing, from 1890-1901.

She appears in the "registers of habitual criminals" in 1902. Selina alias Emma Bradshaw; 5'2in tall, light brown hair, blue eyes, scar and mole on nose; b 1858,Leicester. Sentenced to 3 years jail; AYLESBURY prison.

There is a Selina N Bradshaw in Tooting Bec hospital in the 1939 register "incapacitated". DOB 16 Feb 1858. Could this be her? This Selina probably died in Wandsworth district in q4 1942

Annie's dob was 29 July 1900 (someone has a copy of her birth cert on their Ancestry family tree). It seems that Annie lived in Leicester all their life, according to this tree (and they state that they've done DNA and proved her parentage) but the tree owner has no further info about Selina.

One of her children, Albert, was born in Leeds in 1894.

In 1901, born in Leeds, he is recorded as the adopted son of John and Elizabeth Bromley of 72, Wheat Street, Leicester.

In 1911, a person matching his description was at the Royal Marine Artillery Barracks And Infirmary, Eastney, Portsmouth.
His occupation was RMB (Royal Marines Band).

A military record gives his enlistment as 1st April 1911 at the R.N. School of Music.
A note states that he received a war gratuity on 1st June 1919 of £5. It gives a name which is unclear, but looks like brother ?? of 31 Bardolph St, Leicester.

Another entry gives a lengthy description of of his life, and names his adoptive parents John and Esther Elizabeth Bromley.
It describes his birth parents as William and Lily Bradshaw. The GRO has mmn as Bodycot.

The Leicester Daily Post of 21st November 1914 has a picture of him, following his death on the ship, H.M.S. Monmouth, which sank off the coast of Chile.

The Leicester Chronicle of 21st November 1914
LEICESTER MAN ON H.M.S. MONMOUTH.
Mr. H. Bradshaw, of Barwell, writes to say that his brother, Albert Bradshaw, a musician, of the Royal Marines Band, was on H.M.S. Monmouth when it was sunk by the German squadron off the coast of Chile. Bradshaw was 20 years of age, and his home when ashore was at 72, Wheat Street.

Some trees suggest that Selina might have gone to Australia or New Zealand.

Going back to the OP's original question, probation for repeat offenders didn't start in the UK until around 1908, following the Probation of Offenders Act 1907. Prior to that, only first time offenders* might have received a deferred (ie conditional) sentence which amounted to probation. However there were no probation officers prior to 1907.
Consequently she probably wouldn't have been on probation when she left prison. Even if she was, say from 1907, I very much doubt if any notes specific to her case will have survived. There are some general registers and policy files at TNA. Nothing comes up for Leicester however.

It might be worth checking Leicestershire Record Office, as she will probably appear in the Poor Law records. The Poor Law Guardians were the nearest thing to probation officers prior to 1907.

Thank you for everyone's help and I shall look in to all the information you have provided and suggested
