Dawson Hunslet, Holbeck and Beeston
« on: Tuesday 05 March 24 15:59 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone,

I am new here and I am trying to trace the Dawson side of my family tree, but there are so many Dawson's that I am lost!

Here's what I have so far
My living grandma is a Dawson (Pauline) and her father was Albert Dawson (17 July 1912 - 23 Sept 1976), he married Annie Crossley (24 Mar 1913 - 13 July 1985), these are my great grandparents.

Albert's father was Harry Dawson which I have as 27 Mar 1883 -  approx. 1946 and he married Mary Ann Lightowler (approx. 1885 - 1953) They lived in Hunslet.

Harry and Mary had children, Albert my great grandfather as above, Clara and Leonard who were twins, Doris, Beatrice and I believe a Clifford.

Harry's father I think... was William, and his mother Elizabeth Crabtree however I am not sure.
My grandma told me that Harry's father was a pig farmer in the Cottingley area of Leeds, but I cannot find any information about this at all. And when I am tracing the Dawson's, there are so many, I have even been to the graveyards where I know where some of them are buried and searched on find a grave to find links, assuming they may all be buried together. To no avail! I have found some but only ones that I know are certain based off what my grandma has told me.

I am hoping that someone, who is related however far down the line can help me locate Harry's father onwards.

Any help would be much appreciated :)

The 1906 Marriage record for Harry Dawson to Mary Ann Lightowler in Hunslet
Shows that Harry was a currier, and his father was William Dawson, a miner.

The census records also show that William Dawson was a coal miner, born abt 1843 Wakefield Yorkshire.

William Dawson married Elizabeth Crabtree in 1870 in Leeds.
William was 25, a bachelor, a miner, and his father was John Dawson, a miner.
Elizabeth was 20, a spinster, and her father was William Crabtree, a weaver.

The 1851 census Beeston Yorkshire shows William Dawson, a coal miner, with siblings, and parents:- John Dawson born abt 1813 West Ardsley ( a miner) and Eliza Dawson born abt 1817 Shropshire.

There is a marriage in Feb 1835 Dewsbury for John Dawson to Eliza Butterfield.
It looks as if their first child was Edward (1836)

I don’t see any evidence of pig farmers in these generations of Dawsons, so maybe there were farmers in a female line that married into the Dawsons.

Let me know if that was helpful, and how I can help further.

Harry and Mary had children, Albert my great grandfather as above, Clara and Leonard who were twins, Doris, Beatrice and I believe a Clifford.

I would say that the twins in the family were Doris and Leonard.

In a later record where much of the family is still together,  their birth month is shown as February.

This is great, thank you so much. So I was on the right track with the Dawson's it just confused me when it went onto Wakefield area and West ardlsey etc but it does all link together.

The pig farmers could be the female side. This was given to me by my grandma. I'm just going to ignore this now i know I have the right Dawson's.

Also you're right, it was Doris and Leonard not Leonard and Clara that were twins. I remember Doris as she died when I was around my teens. Clara I barely remember as I was young when she died.
Thanks for your help everyone. I appreciate it

Hi sorry. Just wondered if you could help. I've looked into Fred Arthur and Willie dawson all who died in infancy but I cannot find them on ancestry. Or I can but no reference to their mother being Mary lightowler. Am I looking in the wrong place? Is there a specific place I need to look to find this? Thank you

Bbart in reply #4 above has given you all the birth registrations for the children with mother Lightowler.

You can find them in the GRO index https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

I’m not sure if  Arthur (1914 Sculcoates) is the same family.
