One last thing, I was wondering could someone pop onto Ancestry and look at Jane in the 1911 census to see how many child she has had/how many died?

I believe I may have found a child that died in infancy but the birth doesn’t show on GRO Index so can’t see maiden name.

Was Jane's maiden name BOYD?

STRAUGHAN, MARY  ARABELLA     mmn BOYD
GRO Reference: 1894  D Quarter in ALNWICK  Volume 10B  Page 426

1901 census
New South Row, Bedlington, Morpeth, Durham & Northumberland
William L   Straughan   Head   1872   Horsekeeper coal mine   Northumberland
Jane A   Straughan   Wife   1872 Alnwick, Northumberland
Mary A   Straughan   Daughter 1895 Embleton, Northumberland
Henrietta   Straughan   Daughter   1898 Bedlington, Northumberland
Barbara   Straughan   Daughter    1901 Bedlington, Northumberland

Edit to add - I see from the thread Mary Arabella died 1916 age 21

Was the name of the child you found Margaret? When did they die?

STRAUGHAN, MARGARET  PEGGY     mmn BOYD

Yes Jane’s maiden name was Boyd. Thank you for the 1901 census info  :)

The child I thought could be theirs was a Jane Ann Straughan born in 1902, died 1903. I got the GRO query working which shows the maiden name doesn’t match—so not theirs.

I don’t know when Margaret died—haven’t traced her yet. Henrietta died 1920, and William Jr. died 1961.

It was just the gaps between their children's births made me suspect there might’ve been an extra child in between that had passed, etc.

I wonder
I was thinking that if Margaret was the fourth living child on the 1911 census, it was a close run thing as she was registered April-June 1911 and census day was 2nd April.

I have found that a Margaret Straughan married James S Straughan Q1 1937 (Vol 10b p624). Found them in Acklington on 1939, with her dob 2 April 1912.

If that's a year out she was born on 1911 census day which might explain why she's not listed!

Sorry for the late response.

Thank you for tracing Margaret to the 1939 register—I didn’t even know where to begin. I suppose it’s convenient that she married another Straughan.  ;D

Your observation about the census is interesting, I wonder if she was born later in the day of 2nd April. I’ve sometimes seen where they put “unnamed girl..1 day old” etc. I am relieved to see that 4/4 children listed as alive—less detective work.

Although that does lead me onto something that I slipped over…Mary Arabella doesn’t appear in the 1911 household! I don’t know how I missed that, but searching around she seems to be missing from 1911 census completely  ???
