Date CdV of elderly woman
« on: Wednesday 06 March 24 18:28 GMT (UK) »
I'd appreciate your thoughts on the date of this CdV please. I have others by Gibson on this cardstock, and in the 'vignette' format all dated to the late 1860's (notwithstanding the rounded corners of the card), so I was wondering if this is a similar vintage?

Also, how old do you think the woman might be please?

Thanks for any thoughts you might have.

Bringing this up the board, Jennifer

I think this is mid-late 1860s but the back looks earlier. However, Gibson's early curved corners suggest the later date. Do you have any others by Gibson with this type of back that might help?

I would say that the lady is in her very late 60s- early 70s or even later.

Thanks Gadget

Here are a couple more Gibsons with the same back and rounded off corners, dated to 1860's

Gibson strikes again!

I see that you found a local piece about his work:

Thanks Jim for your help.
I remembered today that there was an article about Gibson in a recent local history publication.
There are several photographs given as examples of his work, including one which is dated to mid 1860's and is on identical cardstock to the two I've posted.

From what I can see of her clothing, it does look mid 1860s.

Maybe Jim will add.

The bodice style is typical 1850's/60's & you won't see it in any
other decade.
Agewise I would suggest 70-80.

I found some egs of 1850s clothing but was put off by the style of the photograph. Could it be a reprint on old card stock?

No reason to believe this is a reprint.
Another 1860's lady.

Sorry Jim. I was sure that you had just said 1850's. I must have misread   :)

Add - her expression suggests she isn't enjoying sitting!
