John Tucker
« on: Saturday 09 March 24 02:24 GMT (UK) »
Hello there. I am curious about the origins of an ancestor of mine, John Tucker. He was born in Plymouth, Devon. Some conflicted information through Ancestry concerning his birthday however.  In the 1802 Census, he is apparently 49 years old (so born in 1801-02), whilst 10 years later, he is listed as being 62 (so born in 1798-99). I understand Tucker is a stupendously common surname in the Devon area.

Hi
Sorry to be a pain but there is no 1802 census.
I assume we are looking for John Tucker living in Ramsgate and married to Mary Goodburn at St Peter's 22.2.1831.(both single)
In 1861 he is 62 and 1851 aged  49 Fisherman.
His burial gives him as born 1799 when he dies 30 Jan 1868.

In 1841 John is absent and Mary seems to be lodging with a Susanna Goodburn age 60 with children John 8,Mary5 ,Sarah 2 and Eliza 3mths.
The eldest son John James Tucker was baptised at St Andrews Plymouth 14.8.1833.His parents were of Castle Dyke Lane fisherman.
I'm guessing John and Mary Tucker went home to see his family.

ps looking at the possibilities of baptisms I'd go for parents John Tucker mariner and Mary Collicot who married St Charles 5.8.1788 as his parents and a baptism 7th June 1802 but I'm not hundred percent. There is a William Tucker in Castle Dyke Lane on the 1861 age 62 fisherman who may be a brother. He seems to work for George Wakeham Tucker born 1814 s of John and Mary Tucker  in 1863..

People back then weren't really concerned about ages; as long as they had a rough idea, they were happy with that.
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

So it appears that William works for his brother?
