Hi Just to add to the story (and verification) I just found the WW11 Service record for Eugene Allan EATHER.  Very interesting reading!

This letter seems to indicate a move by Eugene to the Western Suburbs.

There was also an interesting letter from his daughter in reference to trying to find information on her family history.

Amazing what you find.  Onwards and upwards.  Many thanks Dianna

Ok,  ::)

Well you must read the Service history file for the son of Mary Jane (nee MANN) and Gilbert Noah TURNER who was a brother to Flo Ro b. 1890. https://recordsearch.naa.gov.au/SearchNRetrieve/Interface/SearchScreens/BasicSearch.aspx

His name was Samuel Thomas TURNER.

He was KIA Gallipoli 1916 having enlisted 1915.
He has given his NOK as Mr G. TURNER his uncle of 25 Point Street Pyrmont, whhich we know to be the home of Gilbert TURNER and his wife Ethel (nee FOLLER)!

The tangle of tricks and lies gets extremely complex when it comes to the issuing of his medals.
And it evolves that his mother is Mrs Mary Jane WALKER of 1 Patterson Place South Melb.

I see she had married Geo Thomas WALKER in 1911
Registration number
3768 / 1911
WALKER Geo Thos
CALLEN  Mary Jane

And she  was the widow of Archibald Peebles CALLEN whom she had married in 1904 and who had died in 1908   .

This would account for the remarks about Mary Jane  being “Mrs CALLUM, widow ” in the news item previously noted.

Anyhow things get sticky when Gilbert TURNER is interviewed by the Department’ Special Inquiry officer and has to deny parentage (due to his bigamy).

There are also details of the soldier's will  which includes his half siblings.

Hi Sue
Thanks very much for finding that WW1 Record, very enlightening.  LOL so many fibs isn't there and I could not believe that the father Gilbert was calling himself the UNCLE.

It all adds up now and I noticed that the medals were not claimed.

Mary Jane died as Walker in 1925 in Melbourne, perhaps that is why!

Well I can honestly say that part of the story has been wrapped up nicely.

Both Mary Janes parents come from England as immigrants, lucky as her mums name is SMITH I didn't want to go down that track.

Thanks so much.  Happy that is completed.  Dianna

Just before we wind it up..... ;D ;D.

This may be good to know for the possible genetic connection.

The father of Florence Rose TURNER's (b.1890) 2 children, Arthur MAGUIRE, was most  likely this man. (no real substantiated data, but...)

Arthur Francis Sylvester MAGUIRE b. 1888. Parents Richrad John MAGUIRE and Deborah WAIN. b. Melbourne.

They were a South Melbourne family having a number of chn in the area, The address of Arthur's father was Market stree when in died in 1913.

Arthur married Gladys COLEMAN and died in 1946.  He had had Rheumatic Fever in about 1906 and was discharged medically unfit from WW1 forces.

Hi maddys52

I'm just going over all of the replies and I had to have a chuckle at this.  Say's Florence is the "dearly beloved HUSBAND of Eugene.  LOL is that a typo??  Just thought is was odd!
Anyway thanks for all the help.  Dianna

I think this looks better:

"EATHER, Florence Rose.- October 13, 1958, at hospital, late of 18 Ennis Street, Balmain, dearly beloved husband of Eugene, loved mother of Rose and Arthur, aged 68 years."

SMH 14 Oct 1958

 ;D

I just double checked in case I had made a typo, but no - here's the original. I didn't even notice until you pointed it out!
