Gilchrist watchmakers 1861 Leeds & Huddersfield from Scotland
« on: Monday 11 March 24 17:55 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to John Gilchrist, born 1848 Edinburgh  & brother Joseph, born Edinburgh 1850. John had a shop in Leeds and one in Huddersfield, in the Beast Market. In 1862 there was a robbery at the Huddersfield shop, which is anounced in the Huddersfield Chronicle. John's Leeds shop was at Mill Hill, Boar Lance, Leeds in 1861. I cannot find either in the 1861 cenus.

Something to consider: the Leeds NW Ward is missing from the 1861 census. I'm not sure which area this ward covers. Possibly the Horsforth area? If the Gilchrist family were residing in Leeds on census night they may have been somewhere other than Hunslet.

Is something wrong with your dates? Born 1848 so only 13 in 1861?

Yes, I have had a tremendous amount of help with the Senior - Gilchrist familes. Thought it may be worth one more poke of the fire. Think that the reasson I cannot find the family in the 1861 Leeds N.W. ward is missing has been made clear. My maths were wrong. John Gilchrist & his wife Margaret were both born in 1826. Sometime in the 1860's the Leeds watchmakers buiness was disolved.

Might explain why John snr ended up in NYC by 1870.

Have a feeling John senior was dead by 1868, as shown on his son's wedding certificate. Thank you for your help. John and Margaret were having their shop broken into on the 24th of May 1862.

No mention of John Gilchrist being deceased on the marriage certificate of James Gilchrist in 1875.
Which one are you referring to ?

Margaret state he was in America on the UK 1871 census ??

I thought the most poignant statement was, " I Magaret Gilchrist, do hereby declare tat my husband, John Gilchrist, Maltmil-yard, Lowerhead-row, Leeds, never had to pay a debt for me; no one would give me credit on his account." Leeds Mecury, July 1867. How do you interpret these words.
