James W. Pilgrim married Ann Lilley in 1846 in Southwark. He gives his father as Henry Joseph Pilgrim, plasterer, so he is presumably George's older brother (James was born c.1817).

One of the witnesses to his marriage was a Sophia Pilgrim.

Hmm...

A James, son of Henry Coxen & Sophia Pilgrim, was baptised on 8th December 1817 in Wesleyan Methodist Chapel in Bermondsey. Father's name slightly different but there is also the 'Sophia' connection.

There's an 1826 marriage in Newington for a Richard Tackley and Mary Ann Ray.
Daughter Mary Ann's baptism is 26 Aug 1827 in Southwark.

There's an 1824 baptism in Bermondsey for a George Pilgrim. Parents: George and Sophia.

I think this is the right baptism for George, but whoever was filling in the register made a mistake when entering the father's name. They made mistakes back then too! It is the same Wesleyan Methodist chapel in Bermondsey as James'.

The first child baptised in Bermondsey to Henry and Sophia was Henry Joseph Pilgrim, so that ties in as well.

EDIT - baptism mentioned by Ashtone earlier, but on my search the birth date is given as 21 May 1809. I think the '1801' might belong to baptism above?

There's an 1865 death registration for a George Pilgrim (born 1825) in Camberwell.

Is this George, too? Several records (dated 1845) on FindMyPast.

Britain, Merchant Seamen, 1835-1857
George Pilgrim
Birth: 1825
