Hi Softly Softly. Thank you for your interest.
John Thomas did marry Lizzie Watkins in 1883 and they named their first son Richard Theopholus Thomas in 1887. I have been researching to see if this John Thomas is the son of John Thomas and Margaret Davies (born in Treboeth on 24 December 1860) as identified by you with the 1871 census. If so, he had a younger brother Rees Theopholus Thomas (1867-1912) born in Landore. I have created and sourced a profile for him on WikiTree, which I now use for recording all of my research. Interestingly I found the birth record you suggested for Richard Theophilus Thomas in 1865 on FreeBMD but could not find it on the GRO, where I had hoped to find the mother's maiden name. I have notified GRO and will be interested to see what comes up. I like the way you are thinking but don't believe the younger brother was Richard, or that he died in 1882.

John Thomas senior in the 1871 census is a Steel Smelter, a Silver Smelter in the 1861 census, and a Labourer in the 1851 Census. However according to the 1883 marriage certificate of John and Lizzie (which I have), the father was a coal miner. If not for this, there seems to be a good match between these families.

I think my next step is to continue examining birth certificates between October 1860 and March 1861 to see if there is a better fit.

Thanks again for your suggestions.

Hi Rosie99.
That thread is for the same family but focusing on Lizzie Watkins, the wife of John Thomas. Thanks to all the many RootsChat contributors, I finally unraveled the origins of my great grandmother and her parents. I don't think I could ever have done it on my own, so I really appreciate this web site.
Best wishes

Hi Cas
I have seen this already and am inclined to think it may be my man. If you are interested, I have created a profile on WikiTree with all the known evidence about him as well as the "possibles". Here is his profile https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Thomas-39501

I will follow your suggestion about the Military Board and see if anything new comes up.

Thanks again.
