All excellent work on his wife's side, but the earliest verified fact about Duncan Macarthur himself does seem to be his marriage in 1852.

Once again, where did the Sarah Sands sail from to get to New York in 1849?

A nice start Neale1961, thanks, it means I've found the right mother and can assume her father William is dead, I just have to find out whether it was in the USA or England now.

Your right of course Andrew C, I don't know if its the right Duncan and if he's on any UK census after 1851 its not the right one as MY Duncan married Jane Perry in the USA in 1852.

What I know about Jane perry.................
Well it seems that if she was 27 in the 1860 census she would be 17 in the 1850 census and I have a Jane Perry on that but she seems to be listed with no one of the same name.
She would appear to have been born then around 1833 which makes the Jane I had, born 1836, the wrong one, although I was never convinced it was the right one.

This could be the Sarah Sands, as the only other I could find was registered in 1852. She sailed from Liverpool

And were the Perry family also on the Sarah Sands on the same voyage as Duncan in 1849?

Given that the Duncan McArthur on the Sarah Sands was an engineer, aged 23, and born in Scotland, and that Duncan McArthur who married Jane Perry was a clerk, aged 28 in 1850, 47 in 1870 and 54 in 1880, and consistently says that he was born in England, I'd be surprised if they are one and the same.

Maybe the one you are looking for had already travelled to North America before the 1841 census was taken in Britain? Perhaps with his family?

This link shows that the Sarah Sands was built in Liverpool, the history section details her last sailing between Liverpool and New York as 18th October 1849, Duncan (although possibly now the wrong one) was on the sailing dated 24th August 1849.
