How do you connect the Duncan born in Argyle to the one who came to America. How do you know these are not different people?

There is a Duncan McArthur born 1822 in Kilninver, Argyle on the 1841, 1851, 1861 and 1871 census’

Coincidentally there is a John (20) and Malcolm McArthur (15) on the 1841 census in Kilfinichen.

Out of county means just that, he wasn’t born in Lanarkshire where the census was taken Kilfinichen is a good bit away from Glasgow.

What does it mean "noted born out of the county"??
In the 1841 census, people were asked where they were born.

First they were asked, "in Scotland, England, Wales, Ireland or Foreign parts?"

Then they were asked if they were born in the county where they were actually living, the possible answers being "Yes" or "No".

So you get the following possible results in the 'where born' column in that ceneus
Y = born in the county where they were now living
N = born in the same country but not in the county where they were now living
S = born in Scotland (only used in England and Wales)
E = born in England (only used in Wales and Scotland)
W = born in Wales (only used in Scotland and England)
I = born in Ireland (there is no surviving 1841 census of Ireland)
F = foreign, that is, born somewhere not in Scotland, England, Wales or Ireland

Transcriptions generally expand Y to read "born in the county" and N to read "not born in the county" or "born out of the county".

There is, of course, no substitute for looking at the original document.

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Could be a long job, but you could try some elimination.

Go to www.FreeCen.org.uk and search the 1841 census index for all records of a Duncan Macarthur born say 1819 to 1831, using name soundex. I got 63 results. Save, or download, or make a note of that information.

Then do the corresponding search in 1851 for the same. I got 30 results.

Then compare the two sets of results and eliminate any obvious matches. Then you can concentrate on the ones who were in the 1841 census but not in the 1851.

Looking over this do we have any facts prior to the marriage to Jane Perry in New York in 1852?
