The Will might make interesting reading.

You 2 must have been at this lark for years, that kind of information seems to be at your fingertips.
I'm about 6 months in to this present stint and I must admit I'm a bit more savvy now than what I was before Xmas, but its an exciting curve to be on, you certainly get a buzz when your on a roll.

In the 1851 census, living with Duncan’s family is his nephew, Frederick Gowans age 20, working as a clerk to his Uncle Duncan.

John Frederick GOWANS - Baptism 18 July 1830 Cawdor, Nairn, Scotland. Parents George GOWANS (merchant) and Jane MACARTHUR. George and Jane married in 1815 Cawdor, Nairnshire, Scotland.

It looks like your Duncan comes from the same family as Jane. The census shows her born about 1797 in Cawdor, Nairnshire. Her death certificate 1870 Cawdor from Scotland’s People will give her parents’ names. The index shows her mother as McIntosh.

Looking at baptisms in Cawdor, and names given to Duncan’s children born in London – his parents could be Charles McArthur and May McIntosh. Jane’s death cert, is needed to confirm.

In the 1851, Duncan is 59, and census day was 30 March 1851. Therefore, if his age is accurate, he was born between 30 March 1791 and 29 March 1792. Duncan Macarthur, son of Charles McArthur and Marjory McIntosh, is an exact match.

Jane/Jean McArthur or Gowans' death certificate gives her parents as Charles McArthur and May McIntosh. May is a very common variant of Marjory, so that's great work, Neale.

There seem to be rather a lot of M*cArthur/M*cIntosh couples having children baptised around that time. There's an Alexander M*cArthur and Jean/Jane/Janet M*cIntosh in Nairn, and a Donald M*cArthur and (another) Marjory M*cIntosh not all that far away in Duthil and Rothiemurchus (Aviemore area for those not familiar with the locations of parishes in this neck of the woods).

Just going back a bit to Duncan Macarthur's marriage on 25 Sept 1830 to Fanny Payne.
Duncan is recorded as  bachelor; she is a spinster.
Both bride and groom sign their names.

Witnesses - Robert Pritchard Kell and Hannah Maria Kell
(Robert was a clerk with the Bank of England and was married to Elizabeth Payne. Hannah Maria was his sister, a school teacher. So witnesses probably have no connection with Duncan.)

Curious digression.

In the Old Parish Registers there are 19 marriages of a male M*cArthur to a female M*cIntosh in the whole of Scotland before 1855, of which no fewer than seven were in the tiny county of Nairn.

The marriage of Charles McA and Marjory McI is not in the surviving records.

I we assume that they too were married in the County of Nairn, that would make eight out of 20, or 40%. An astonishingly high proportion.
