Richard Fearon JACKSON m Mary STEEL(E)?
« on: Friday 15 March 24 01:27 GMT (UK) »
Hi folks

I found Richard in the England Wales Civil Register of Marriages 1837-1915.

Wigton, 10b, 679, 1st quarter, 1884

There are 3 women that appear on that register page.  One I have eliminated as the incorrect first name.

That leaves 2, that may or may not be the same person:
STEEL Mary or STEELE Mary.

I would like to confirm which is the correct surname spelling and if possible when she was born, and who her parents are please.

I have looked on Find My Past (Banns, England, 1884 | Cumberland Marriages, 1884), Ancestry, and British Newspaper Archive but nothing other than that Civil registration appears to show up and one article that suggests he was from Aspatria.

I am wondering if there are offline resources someone may have that would solve this 10-month mystery.

Thank you.

Richard Fearnon JACKSON baptism 10 June 1860 at Aspatria, Cumberland. Parents - James and Rebecca.
His birth registration - Cockermouth (10b/495) Jun qtr 1860, mother's maiden name BROWN.

If you purchase the marriage certificate it should show Mary's father's name and occupation.

When looking at the FreeBMD entry for the marriage of Richard Fearon JACKSON, I would suggest that Mary STEEL/E are the same person. There is obviously a missing male spouse in the entry - using the Page Entries search:
https://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/PageEntries.pl

you can see there is one entry which has only 3 names - 10b/669. This suggests the extra spouse is entered under the incorrect page number (679 instead of 669 ?). On page 669 Hannah RICHARSON married Joseph PEARS 13 March 1884 at Caldbeck. I was hoping Jane BROWN (on page 679 on the index) married William LATTIN (on page 669 on the index), but actually he married Margaret STRONG 1 March 1884 at Caldbeck. (Margaret STRONG appears to be mistakenly entered under Wigan 8c/669) So still not sure who Jane BROWN (on page 679) married. Possibly Henry Sewell GRAHAM - he seems to be an odd entry in Mar qtr 1884 too.  :-\

Hope this makes sense. There is a guide on FreeBMD for finding a missing spouse:
https://www.freebmd.org.uk/marriage-help.html

But in any case, I still think Mary STEEL/E is the same person.

Thanks for that maddys52.

I figured that 1 male to 3 females wasn't correct but didn't know how to see what might be on other pages.  Have bookmarked those 2 links.

Am holding off on the certificate for now, as the research is for someone else, but may need to get it to put me out of my misery - these folks are the last in a family tree to be identified. ::)

There's a couple of Jackson births with mmn Steele in Ulverston and Whitehaven districts. Can't find them later - but I see Richard may have emigrated to New Zealand?

I understand not wanting to necessarily pay the $$.  :)

Mary JACKSON's death certificate should also have information about her father and mother. She died on 20 September 1930, in her 73rd year, so born c1858.

This year of birth also fits with a passenger list for the family in 1913 on the Omrah travelling from Brisbane to London, which has her age as 55.

Yes, they emigrated to NZ, children born in NZ 1888 (Eveline Ann Rebecca) and 1891 (Hilda Lariena, though on the passenger list she is Ada Mary?) Also a son 1896 (Richard Fearon)

A nice obituary:

Interesting about the ship's passage. Perhaps this is a subsequent one, as I had them emigrating:
11 May 1884, on the Aorangi, London, England to Canterbury, New Zealand as part of the Assisted Immigrant Scheme.

Mabel
Thanks for that tip off.  I will look for those births as an aside.

Hmmm....not sure what to make of the Hilda Lariena vs Ada Mary.

I had a note from a military file that Mary may have been born in Keswick.
