Adoptions in 1920s
« on: Saturday 16 March 24 16:38 GMT (UK) »
My grandmother had a son in 1921 and he is only recorded on the census for that year, then he disappears. I’ve been advised that he might have been adopted but records are scant and I can’t find a trace of him. Any tips on how to proceed, anything would be gratefully received, thanks.

Legal adoptions in England & Wales only began in 1926.
Before that there may have been a private adoption?

Where were mother and son in 1921?

P.S. Welcome to RootsChat! :D

Is his birth certificate noted as adopted (in the margin) ?

Many adoptions arranged before 1927 were formalised though the courts afterwards.

Welcome from me too

Was he with his mother on the 1921 census?

Did she marry between 1921 & 1939?

If so - could he have taken his stepfathers surname?
