George H. Slatford's obituary says that he served in WWI, so he may have enlisted before he needed to complete a draft registration card.

George's marriage record from 1912 that was mentioned above is here - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939Z-BJL4-7?view=index&personArk=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3AXL4Q-CDW&action=view

The Veterans Affair index shows that he was in the military from 6 April 1917 to 19 April 1919.  https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-C3MW-CQBD-S?view=index&personArk=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3AW7KC-NT3Z&action=view  The earliest registration for WWI draft in the US was 5 Jun. 1917, so he would have already been in then.

George was quoted in a Los Angeles newspaper about his predictions for the war.  https://cdnc.ucr.edu/?a=d&d=LAH19181028&dliv=userclipping&cliparea=1.4%2C1448%2C2469%2C665%2C1557&factor=4&e=-------en--20--1--txt-txIN-george+slatford-------

Interesting that the younger George married a few days before his mother's death.  Maybe she was ill and he was trying to make sure she was still around for his wedding.

In the San Diego Union newspaper from 4 Apr. 1915, George H. Slatford, who entered a plea of guilty to the theft of an automobile belonging to Justice of the Peace Banta of El Centro, was placed on probation for 3 years.  He said he had frequently used Banta's car and rode with him the day before the alleged theft in Imperial County.

In case the OP is interested in reading about Annie's burial place (Evergreen Cemetery), here's an interesting history including photos:

In 1910 Annie and George's address (W. 16th Street) was located near the north University Park neighbourhood, just south of Downtown Los Angeles. At the time it was considered a middle class area.

Hi everyone, I can’t thank you enough for all your hard work.
It’s quite sad because it appears that all the siblings died young.
It was interesting reading that the area Annie was living in at one time was regarded as a “middle class” area. My great grandmother (and great grandfather) were buried in a pauper’s plot. The three youngest children were put into the children’s home when their mother died.

From all the information you have provided it doesn’t look like George had any children.
I love the story about him pleading “guilty” for the theft of the JP’s car.
(For those of you have read about Arthur Crabtree, b.1892 he allegedly stole from his uncle in NZ.)
Looks like two cousins (mothers were sisters) were from the same mold.
I hope I don’t find any more “crooked” relatives!!!

Perhaps George junior felt it would be nice to get married before his mother passed away.
My parents did exactly the same. My father’s father was dying and from what my Gran used to say, Grampa died happy knowing that his eldest son had found “a nice girl to look after him”.

Thank you all for all the links you have provided too. I have a lot of reading to do now.

Given father George's cause of death ("paralysis") it explains why his occupation is "none" in the 1910 census.  His death record states the duration was 1 year and 4 months.

The neighbourhood the family lived in was adjacent to streetcar lines. Hence some nearby occupants described as "motorman" in the same census report. Looks like son George re-settled in the same neighbourhood by the 1930 census, to work as a motorman.
