Occupation of Charles Stent 1851 census
« on: Sunday 17 March 24 12:09 GMT (UK) »
Any suggestions on the occupation on the top line of this 1851 census? He is my relative Charles Stent. I have an idea what it is but possibly best at this stage not to mislead anyone.

Thanks

Martin

I think it is supposed to be Hackney Man but has been misspelt as Hankey.

I agree with Hackney, but I read it as Hackey man.

He and others in his family were indeed fly and horse drawn bus operators. I thought it might have said Horse Fly Master.

I hadn't thought of Hackney - I don't know if the term was in use outside of London at this time, but it certainly could be that.

Thanks for your ideas.

Hackney carriages in Bradford in 1853

17 December 1853: Halifax Guardian

Quote
BRADFORD
FURIOUS CAB DRIVING – On Monday, in the Court of the Borough Magistrates, Stuart Connell, a cab driver, was summoned for having on Saturday night week being guilty of furiously driving his cab in Silsbridge-lane to the great danger of pedestrians. The charge, which was preferred by PC Hadson, was proved by Mr Charles Brumfit. Mr Isaac Rountree, the Inspector of Hackney carriages, stated to the bench that the defendant had been fined for a similar offence no less than three times in small amounts. On this occasion, however, the fine was made 20s., and the costs 15s.

Added: June 29th 1854 Brighton Gazette (so closer to Worthing) – a reference to the Inspector of Hackney Carriages in a report on the Brighton Council meeting.
