Help with Uniform Identification for Two WW1 Soldiers
« on: Monday 18 March 24 08:38 GMT (UK) »
I have a collection of photographs from my great grandmother. Among them were 2 photographs of men in WW1 uniform. I am trying to identify them and it would be a great help to confirm their regiments. I think the younger man is wearing an East Surrey Regiment uniform while the older gentlemen may be wearing the uniform of the Labour Corps.

The Cap Badge on the top photo does appear to have the outline of the East Surrey Regiment:

The bottom photo cap badge is not very clear.

Could be the early General Service type:

The Labour Corps was founded in 1917, any writing on the back of the photo to indicate it's age?

Thank you for your help Tony,

Written on the back of the second photo is Pte E Carey, and the only E Carey in my family tree that I have found so far is Elias Carey. There are no service records, but there is a Private Elias Carey on the Medal Roll who served in the Labour Corps number 524372. the cap badge is not very clear in the original, but I think it could be a shield with animals either side as shown for the later badge in your link.

Thanks again,
Lucy

The large cost of arms cap badge was worn in 1917-18 by the Volunteer Battalions - formerly Volunteer Training Corps as well as the Labour Corps.
