parents of Robert McMillan listed as James McMillan 1801–1854
born abt 1801 - Dumfriesshire, Scotland died 8 August 1854 - Pittston, Luzerne, Pennsylvania.

and Mary Law 1801–1874 (note the death date differs from the information on the geneanet Community Tree - 1851) born abt 1801 - Wanlockhead, Dumfriesshire, Scotland died 8174 Scotland
Well, they are all wrong. ********* Ancestry peddling dud information again.

I found a few credits and viewed the 1857 marriage certificate, which says that Robert McMillan's parents were John McMillan, gamekeeper, and Margaret Laing.

John McMillan and Margaret Laing had seven recorded children between 1827 and 1849, anll baptised in Dunscore, Dumfries-shire. In 1851 they are all in Riddingshill Cottage, Irongray, Dumfries-shire.

Margaret McMillan, other surname Laing, died in Lochmaben, Dumfries-shire, in 1875, aged 69. There is also a death of John McMillan, 76, in Lochmaben in 1881, mother's maiden surname Johnstone, who may or may not be her husband.

There's only one recorded baptism of a child to Archibald Roy and Margaret Ross, a son Alexander baptised in Rosemarkie, Ross-shire in 1818. However there is a family in Nairn in 1841 and 1851 with Archibald Roy, mason, and wife Margaret, with a large number of children including 10-year-old Ann in 1841. Margaret Roy, other surname Ross, mother's maiden surname Boyne, died in Nairn in 1881 aged 75. Archibald Roy, mother's maiden name Falconer, died in Nairn in 1877 aged 84.

I could of course be wrong. Never trust anything you find online including anything I might say, unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because mistakes can and do occur.

You need to go to www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk, invest in a few credits, and use them to look at those death certificates.

Good work, Sandra! That does seem to clinch it very satisfactorily.
