" black protestant " Meaning
« on: Monday 18 March 24 19:09 GMT (UK) »
Can I get a Definition  For  " black protestant "  ?  that does not refer to African descendants .

I think it means extreme orthodox  , but I would like etymology .

My Father would always say his Grandfather was a " Black Protestant " But he converted to marry A
 Catholic girl  .

Could it mean he was a non-practicing Protestant with no real belief or affiliation to the religion he was brought up in?

Apparently it is a long-standing term of sectarian abuse (to describe being fervently Protestant).

Have a read at this Wikipedia article.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Black_North

Given the context it may imply that the man in question was a Protestant from Northern Ireland

Ashtone  how long-standing has it been used .

Is it abusive and sectarian ?  Do you have any articles to refer to .

Or our we just opining . (to describe being fervently Protestant).

Do you have a list of abusive terms and definitions  .

That's really what I'm looking for

Not trying to hurt feelings or start a flame war .

Thanks  Bill K

The term was mentioned in a biography review in the London Review of Books (LRB). It didn't give any details as to how long the term's been in use, etc. I think the bio was about an Irish sportsman.

Have you traced his family - parish records etc.

There are a few newspaper snippets, to which I have no access where the phrase is used.
For example - this does not refer to ‘black’ but maybe the link to Orangemen
13th June 1855 - Blackburn Standard
Refers to ‘ the district meeting of the Blackburn branch of the Bolton Protestant Association of Loyal Orangemen’
